******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY ********************
Hardcore punk, or simply hardcore, is a music genre that is related to punk rock. It is also a subculture that is believed to have formed sometime in the latter part of the 1970s.
People have varying views about the origin of the term “hardcore punk.” Some say D.O.A, a Vancouver-based music band helped make the term famous courtesy of their 1981 album “Hardcore ‘81”. Meanwhile, Steven Blush, a hardcore historian believed the term referred to being “fed up” with the ongoing new wave and punk music back then. Others define it as “form of exceptionally harsh punk rock.”
Style-wise, Allmusic opined that hardcore is about “playing harder, louder, and faster” and this is what differentiates it from the typical punk rock. Vocalists of hardcore punk bands usually scream, shout and chant. Hardcore punk helped spawn several movements and even got involved with the creation of many independent record labels throughout the 1980s. Music genres that have attained mainstream success, particularly alternative metal, alternative rock, grunge, thrash metal and even hip-hop have been influenced by hardcore punk in one way or another.
